Service Rates

 Editing:

For editing I charge a rate of $3.00 per 1000 words. With this I will devote all my time and attention to your story and will keep notes and chapter analyses with ideas on how to improve the story. I will correct for typos and punctuation issues and offer suggestions to improve readability such as merging short sentences, breaking apart larger ones, merge fragments, small changes (like comma placement) to make everything easier to read, point out redundancies, and a few other essentials to ensure that your book can compete with the published market. I would prefer to receive 10-15 pages for sample editing first before undertaking the entire book; sample edits are free.

I reserve the right to turn down an editing job. If I begin editing and find that it needs more help than I initially thought I will turn down the work, refund any money paid up front, and provide a few detailed reasons why it is not ready. This is usually due to poor plot structure, poor character development, and/or poor sentence structure; essentially, if I feel that fixing up your book compromises your voice I will turn it down.

Proofreading:

Proofreading is a basic typo/punctuation error run-through. Not as comprehensive as editing, but I only charge $2.00 per 1000 words for this service. I do occasionally fix comma placement and difficult readability, but not as much as editing. I would recommend proofreading to anyone who feels confident that their book makes sense enough for me to simply go through and only fix words that are misspelled and fix any punctuation that absolutely needs to be corrected (i.e. missing quotes). A 10-15 page sample proofread will give you a good idea of the difference between proofreading and editing.

I don't include reviews for proofreading, but reviews can be added onto the price for 50 cents per 1000 words. A 60K word book would cost $120 for proofreading and an additional $30 for a review. I work much faster while proofreading and only pay attention to the context when it is relevant to an error. Otherwise, I likely won't remember enough about the book to write up a decent review, so the extra charge is enough for me to slow down a little and take notes on each chapter in order to write up a critique for you and a review on my blog, if you feel it is ready for advertisement.

Critiques:

I offer critiques and reviews to books without any editing or proofreading involved. This service goes for $1.00 per 1000 words, but can take up to two weeks to complete due to more pressing projects. This is good for learning about any plot holes and other such story related issues that I find, though you can likely find someone who will read it for free on the web. This is best for the occasion when you can't find anyone to give an honest critique for free and need to know what needs improvement before sending it off into critic infested waters.
